Hurricane Matthew is approaching and supposed to hit us tomorrow. The truck in front of us swerves over to the side of the road, just off Bonaire’s Bachelor Beach, near Lighthouse Point. “Fins” shouted as our dive buddies pile out of the truck to take a closer look. We run to the edge of the water as nearby snorkelers are seeing the show of a lifetime 100 yards off the beach. Those lucky people were in the right place at the right time. We stand, green with envy in our half-on wetsuits and no time available to swim out and catch the show. Opportunity, MissedRead More →

Open Water Certifications offer an earned respect for those who were able to accomplish difficult tasks underwater, and of course, under pressure. Literally. But what happens after the certification? During your Open Water course, you may have learned that there are several classes you can take with your dive shop, and you should engage in those. But how do you gain confidence to start those courses? The good news for divers is that building confidence with diving usually requires more diving. And doing it in a beautiful, tropical, warm and guided place makes it easier and fun. But if you do not have the opportunity to escape forRead More →

Moray Eel vs Lionfish over Coral Reef

Moray Eel vs. Lionfish

Eight-five degrees topside. Seventy four degrees below the surface. I hang in the water at fifty-five feet and watch a Lionfish become ensnared in the teeth of a Moray Eel, whose length is approximately five foot. These numbers add up to be an interesting battle between two predators and something the experts claim should never be – Eels fighting Lionfish, in the Caribbean Sea. The Lionfish Problem For years, the non-native Lionfish population has grown to unmanageable numbers (according to our local aquarium) in the Caribbean Sea and now, into the Atlantic Ocean. To dive with these creatures outside of the eastern oceans seems likeRead More →

Mask, snorkel, fins. Check. Wetsuit, booties, exposure suit. Check. BCD, air delivery system, weights. Check. Full tank and buddy. Check. You might think you’re ready to dive, and for many dives, you probably are. However, there are few extra things to consider before your next dive. Though it is nearly impossible to prepare for every situation that can arise on the water, a few small preparations can save your dive, reduce stress and provide comfort before your next dive. Here are a few simple things you can do to be better prepared for your next trip to the water. Save a Dive Kit You’ve heardRead More →

Choosing an underwater video light system for your GoPro or small video light system can be challenging, especially when you start shopping and comparing prices. Check out our “GoPro Underwater Video Light Comparison” video. Before you buy your video lights, consider a few things: Power (Lumens) The brightness of the light will greatly depend on what type of diving and underwater usage you desire.  For daylight in shallower depths of clear water, you will need a much more powerful light to utilize sunlight, but conquer dark areas.  For night dives in clear water, you need less power and perhaps a wider angle.  Add plankton, silt orRead More →

Night Diving with Giant Tarpon

Night diving is an adventure that very few life adventures surpass. It is a unique experience and very rarely the same experience, twice.  At night, you have the opportunity to see critters you wouldn’t normally see in the daytime. Some fish and underwater creatures go to bed while the night shift takes over and the ocean once again, comes alive.   Night Diving On my night dives, I have had the pleasure of seeing a spawning Sea Cucumber, which to my great disappointment, was being recorded steadily with the camera switch in the off position. Only later did I realize what an amazing opportunity this wasRead More →

Scuba Diving Full Face Mask

Scuba Diving with a Full Face Mask

Full face masks have been gaining popularity with both snorkeling and scuba diving communities for a while now. The commercials we see online show perfectly shaped, tanned models diving in and having fun in perfect blue water. Surely, if that doesn’t make you want to try a full face mask, I don’t know what will. Full face mask infomercials make us believe that the “claustrophobic” divers and snorkelers may prefer a full face mask because they allow you to breath through your nose. And, you no longer have to bite down on a regulator to keep air flowing to your mouth. Better yet, they claimRead More →

If you are on the fence about if or how to buy scuba diving equipment, this article is for you.  Many new divers tend to dip one toe in the diving pool and can’t decide whether to jump in or stay topside.  Dive shops will advise you to buy, and you may be thinking they have an ulterior motive – to sell you the most expensive thing possible and make money off of you.  Perhaps that may be true in some cases, but I’ve found it to be more of an exception than the rule. You see, most employees in a dive shop are divers.Read More →
