If you are 40 years old today, plan to retire at 65 years of age and dive the reefs you’ve always wanted to dive, you’re going to be very, very disappointed. We recently hosted a screening of the Netflix Documentary “Chasing Coral”. The process of preparations for this, as well as our Coral Restoration Expedition have been an educational experience.  Today, it seemed appropriate to share some of those our findings. Reef Stats Large sections of the Great Barrier Reef were destroyed – everyone was shocked. But 97% of the staghorn coral in Florida is already gone – did you know? Safety stops. We all have to take them. We spend our obligatory 3 minutes at 15 feet for recreational diving and whether you are drift diving, fighting for your depth against the swells and jellyfish, or shore diving and watching your PSI diminish, there’s always something great to see. Shore diving in low or no current has become one of my favorite pastimes. That long, slow swim towards shore always offers time to relax and take in all the sights and sounds of the ocean. Then, that moment comes. A moment of sheer bliss as you enter a warm sunny thermocline, which envelopes your bodyRead More →

Reading is a favorite pastime for many, and vacation is an especially great time to break into a good story and escape reality. Here are some of my top adventure books to bring on any dive trip, beach getaway, snorkeling or island vacation. Island Vacation Books Shadow Divers by Robert Kurson A based-on-fact story about the discovery of a WWII German U-boat in the Atlantic ocean, off the coast of New Jersey.  This book will remind even the most avid divers to take proper precautions when SCUBA diving. The Last Dive by Bernie Chowdhury “A Father and Son’s Fatal Descent into the Ocean’s Depths”. Another story about the WWII GermanRead More →

Red Sea Slug Nudibranch

What is exactly is a Nudibranch? Wikipedia says: A soft-bodied mollusk. I like to think of “Nudibranch” as a common term that SCUBA divers throw around on land because the hand signals for such a creature are virtually non-existent. There are several thousand different Nudibranchs that live in the oceans, deep to shallow, cold to warm water and surprisingly, they all look very different from one another. Their “gills” are exposed, making the translated name “naked gills” make sense. They are indeed quite unique creatures, and still allow the SCUBA diving world plenty of interest for macro lens photographers and well-controlled buoyancy divers. This littleRead More →

The Prince Albert shipwreck is a sunken upright vessel off the coast of Roatan, Honduras. A popular dive destination, the wreck is a fairly easy dive from the exterior. On a clear day, visibility allows a nice view of the entire ship against the beautiful blue Caribbean Sea. The video will take you on a tour of the wreck dive Prince Albert from the marker buoy on the far side of the reef, taking you 30 degrees north and landing at the ship’s base, sunken in the sand. We’ll follow around past the hull, over the top and a little inside the ship. The stoneRead More →
