The warning came “the visibility is terrible, you won’t enjoy yourself”. Challenge accepted.
Florida Keys Diving
Jules Undersea Lab and the Undersea Lodge are located in Key Largo Florida. It is the place to go when the seas are too rough – if you can handle this terrible visibility.
Entering the Lagoon
We were welcomed in by the mangrove jellies, pulsing aimlessly around Emerald Lagoon. Entering the water, I was enveloped in green water, questioning if I was in a fresh, brackish, or sea water. The answer came as marine life unfolded the mystery with glorious anemones, sponges, worms, and a great surprise of a tiger flatworm. Looking up along the mangrove wall was an unforgettable dreamland, like Alice looking up through the rabbit hole at jellyfish, grunts, mangrove roots, sunlight and falling leaves.
I couldn’t tell that the visibility was terrible through all the amazing things I saw. Maybe next time I will succumb to the attitude of not diving due to poor visibility, not today. Diving in mountain lakes, ponds to plug drains, find lost items with absolutely zero visibility, the warnings just couldn’t ruin my day.
Try harder, Florida cynics.
