Sea of Cortez

A Kaleidoscope Beneath the Surface

At long last, the opportunity to dive the legendary Sea of Cortez finally came around—and it absolutely did not disappoint. From the moment we descended, it was clear why Jacques Cousteau called this place “the world’s aquarium.”

Every inch of the seascape felt alive. Tiny nudibranchs and sea slugs—creatures we expected to be subtle and shy—exploded with brilliant, unexpected color. Electric blues, fiery oranges, and patterns so surreal they looked hand-painted. Even the smallest sea snails carried their own vibrant flair.

Drifting farther, we met the locals: hogfish cruising with quiet confidence, gobies and blennies darting in and out of their micro-kingdoms, flatworms gliding like living ribbons, and sea stars scattered across the rocks like constellations. Familiar silhouettes we’ve seen across the Caribbean and Pacific—but here, in the Sea of Cortez, everything feels turned up a notch. More vivid. More expressive. More extraordinary.

Diving Deeper into the Sea of Cortez

And then there was the black coral. Not the dark, mysterious presence you might expect, but an exotic, flamboyant showpiece unlike anything we’ve seen anywhere else. Fields of yellow polyp black coral lined the rocky bottom as far as the eye could see.

If you love exploring unique ecosystems, strange and beautiful critters, and underwater worlds that surprise you at every turn, the Sea of Cortez should be at the top of your dive bucket list.
